Disposing of spent uranium rods?

Many countries around the world are calling for the countries that mine the uranium should be the countries that dispose of the waste product. I am Australian, & I don't want radioactive material used by other countries being brought back here. Sure we mine it, but we don't use it! It's the other countries that refine it into a dangerous substance & then use it, why should we be responsible for their waste?

From my point of view, expecting Australia to dispose of other countries waste is like me expecting someone from the supermarket to come around & wipe my **** because they provided me with food.

Thoughts?

I agree with you in concept. The main need for a disposal site for spent fuel rods is that they can be kept away from any populated area, encased in lead and buried deep into the non porous rock well below the surface to prevent contamination of the surrounding soil, water etc. The country that chooses to use it should be responsible, not the country or origin of the raw ore.

Here's my view. YOu are on an island, even though you have areas where it's isolated, I don;t want other countries to ship it there. First thing, it would increase accidents with the extra distance, and then it could be stolen.
