Fasting on the Day of Haj?

I understand that there is a fast that can be performed during this occasion, however i wish to know the relavance and the quotes/evidence relating to it as I thought it was a made up thing?

I'm considering fasting but want to know why

    the arfaa day is the day before the first day of eid ., it is a sunnah to fast in it

    there was a hadeeth about muhammed SAW that said that those who fast on that day their sins in the past year and the following year will be cleaned (small sins )
