Is it acceptable to politely interrupt someone's long explanation on the phone at work?

In order to transfer their call to the correct person or extension?

I am often alone in the office and have other calls to answer, as well as visitors to take care of. Don't want to be rude - just wondering...

Absolutely. You can stop them and say "Excuse me. Sorry to interupt but I would like to transfer you to the person who can help you with that. Their name is ____. Please hold while I transfer your call"

If possible, make it a warm transfer. That is to say, dial the number, wait til the party picks up, tell them the callers name and a very quick explanation (calling about a bill, has a complaint, etc)

it's all in how you do it. when i worked customer service recently, i was told not to interrupt, but to get my call time down. then i talked to other sups and they said they interrupt all the time with "let me just stop you right there" and helped them accordingly.

i'd but in with a "sir?" or "ma'am?" to get them to stop their diatribe and get the help you already know they need.
