Question about Gay Marriage/Adoption and Society?
Hello everyone. I'm here today to get some opinions on the topic of gay marriage and adoption, and its "effects" on society. Let me be clear up front, I am only looking for answers on its effects on SOCIETY, I don't need hateful mean comments, just honest opinions please. And I won't be upset if you don't agree with my lifestyle, please just be honest with me, I want people's opinions.
I see comments online from detractors of gay marriage/adoption legalization that tend to say, and I am paraphrasing a bit here, "Legalizing gay marriage/adoption will unravel the moral fabric of society and be chaotic." And to people who view it in this manner, I have a simple question. How will letting people get married/adopt kids be that detrimental to society?
Let me pose to you a challenge. Look at Canada. They legalized gay marriage in 2005, and they seem to be doing just fine. Every nation in the world basically likes them, and they're not crumbling in front of our very eyes. And if that's not enough, what about Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and Denmark? The sky doesn't seem to be falling on them. I don't see riots erupting and society falling apart at the seams in Spain, Argentina, and Portugal. And this last one really gets me. America, the nation that prides itself on freedom and democracy, is behind a nation in AFRICA in this issue on human rights. South Africa, the nation known for years of oppression and apartheid, has legalized gay marriage and given its homosexual citizens the same rights as heterosexuals, before the "beacon of democracy" America claims to be. And by the end of next year, France will have legalized gay marriage as well, which makes sense considering they're the country of love.
And with this also comes the topic of adoption. Most of these nations that have legalized gay marriage have also legalized gay adoption, and the children of these gay couples in their respective nations seem to be doing just fine. I have a friend here in the U.S. with gay dads and she's the best person in the world, she's not "confused" on why she doesn't have a mom, she didn't turn out "different" because she didn't have a female figure in her life. And plus, I'm sure that if a gay couple adopted a child, one would be a "mother figure" to their child, since many gays are effeminate. And don't say "Well if they're both effeminate, who will be the father figure?" One of the men I'm sure would step up and act like a father to their child.
So after taking all that info in, I re ask my question. Looking at all of the countries where it is already legal, and seeing how they are doing in today's world, can you honestly still tell me that legalizing gay marriage/adoption will harm society? Please be honest.
And if you are a very religious person, I ask this. If God hates gay acts so much, why hasn't he brought his wrath down on these nations for allowing gays to get married and adopt children?
I thank you for your time and opinions.

First I'm gay and for gay marriage. I do have a friend that is quite intelligent and explained his objection to me very well. I also debunked it with two sentences.
His point was that if the definition of marriage is changed then they will have to allow a marriage of 1 man 2 women(or more), a 50 year old man marrying a 12 year old girl, a woman marrying a horse....etc.
My debunk:
Those marriages are illegal, there are laws on the books making them against the law. There is no laws on the books, that are enforceable, that make Homosexuality in the USA illegal.
There are laws making homosexuality illegal but the Supreme Court struck them down. Lawrence v. Texas, 539 U.S. 558 (2003), is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court. In the 6-3 ruling, the Court struck down the sodomy law in Texas and, by extension, invalidated sodomy laws in thirteen other states, making same-sex sexual activity legal in every U.S. state and territory. The Court overturned its previous ruling on the same issue in the 1986 case Bowers v. Hardwick, where it upheld a challenged Georgia statute and did not find a constitutional protection of sexual privacy.
Lawrence explicitly overruled Bowers, holding that it had viewed the liberty interest too narrowly. The Court held that intimate consensual sexual conduct was part of the liberty protected by substantive due process under the Fourteenth Amendment. Lawrence invalidated similar laws throughout the United States that criminalized sodomy between consenting adults acting in private, whatever the sex of the participants.
The case attracted much public attention, and a large number of amici curiae ("friends of the court") briefs were filed. Its outcome was celebrated by gay rights advocates, who hoped that further legal advances might result as a consequence.
So there is no reason we will not soon see legalized gay marriage. I believe we will see it within the next 2 years. Gays can already serve openly in the armed services. The first openly gay Cadet graduated the Air Force Academy this past summer. The fuse is lit it cannot be put out.

I read your extremely long question, and I have several opinions on the matter.
I think one of the primary concerns of those against gays adopting a child is that lack of a proper father or mother figure. I believe, based on my own experience, that a mother and father figure is very important for a child to have. On the other hand, there are many living situations in which the mother and father figures are bad examples, and the kid would be better off without.
Provided that like in any adoption it is a priority to the agency that they ensure a good living situation for the child, I think that gay people adopting a child would be alright. People are capable to live in a situation without a true mother or father figure, and if they gay couple are understanding enough, I am sure one of them will provide the type of parenting that is lacked due to their relationship type.
As for gay marriage, this is more of a non-issue for me. In other words, I think that gay marriage is perfectly alright. If two people want to be together, then they should have the right to be.
For those that believe gay marriage will harm society, they are most likely set in a belief of how thing should be, i.e. gay couples do not fit into their ideal image of society. Also, if these people would consider that these are other people's relationships at stake, and they have no real reason to medal with this sort of issue. It is not as if it will affect them.

I think you have very much answered your own question, because how can anyone argue with the facts in your question. Realising that religion will use any means to control the minds of it's followers, the issue over gay people and their right for equality will never go away whilst religion is a dictator of so called morals and what is deemed right for a proper society. You and I know and so do many others that being gay is perfectly natural. Whether it is gods doing depends on our own beliefs, but in this world everything happens for a reason. Today society is obsessed with protecting children from what they perceive as a threat. We molly coddle kids today and then wonder why they grow up muddle headed and confused. Gay people are no more a threat to kids as any other section of society.
My only problem within your question is your assumption that in a gay relationship, one might be effeminate. In most cases that will not be the case, as contrary to popular opinion, most gay guys are just normal people who don't display their sexuality in any outwardly way.
The biggest threat and potential harm to society and the minds of the young are those who remain obsessed with people being gay, obsessed with their own vision of what they think gay sex is all about and obsessed with their own narrow view of what moral fibre is. So much more going on in today's world that needs us all to get obsessed about, but whilst religion is a controlling factor in all our lives whether we believe in the god thing or not, society is being harmed big time.

the legalization of gay marriage/adoption is something that should have happened many years ago in all countries but it has been held back by religious groups and misinformed individuals but times are changing and for the better as far as most people are concerned.
but myself and most of my friends fully support gay marriage/adoption and are trying to help make it legal here in australia.

One thing in our society changed after gay marriage was allowed: a number of homosexuals married.

Clearly the social chaos and anarchy in those countries will result in a catastrophe of global proportions.
Any day now.
Yep, real soon.

I found this interesting. It is more specific to Australia, but the findings can be generalised. http://drs4equality.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012...
