To compensate eukaryotes often form tissues and specialize. Such is the case with plants in animals. In a tree for example the individual eukaryotes work in junction. Root cells draw water from the soil and transfer this water to the cells in the leaf, something those cells could not do. The cells in the leaf provide the nurishment to the cell in the roots which the roots could not make on their own. Thus, the formation of specific tissues and specialization of eukaryotes help compensate for their surface area to volume ratio.
