population and linear equation?
In 1980 the population of Boom Town began increasing at a rate of 200 people per year. The 1980 population was 2000 people. What is your projection for the population in the year 2010?
So would it be 2010-1980=30 divided by 200? Or am I completely wrong?
Thanks

You need to make an equation in the form of y=mx+b
Using the information the population starts at 2000 (y intercept)
It increases 2 people per year (slope=rise/run, 200 people/yr)
Therefore y=200x+2000
Let's find pupil action (y) when the year is 2012 (x)
Trick is when you substitute for x it is not 20120, like you showed you subtract 1980 from it, which is 30.
Y=200(30)+ 2000
Y= 8,000
Therefore population will be 8,000
