how can i lower my gas bill?

i don't have a gas heater and only have a gas stove top but my gas bill and usage was 2.5 times higher according to the power company for this quarter. I use the stove top for heating water for tea and washing up and the occassional stirfry. How can i lower the usage further? Cut cooking times?

Wash up in cold water? Reduce tea consumption to two cups a day? Not boil drinking water?

Given the higher consumption rate could there be something wrong with the meter?

Update:

Hippie? Only sad old hippies use gas stoves?

Where I live the gas stove top came installed in the apartment.

Many houses still has gas stoves and ovens.

where on earth do you live that you think only hippies use gas?

maybe you can afford a super modern electric stove top the sort you see in design zines but other people can't!

people do not vote for this incredibly rude and thoughtless answer!

Heating water for tea and washing up on a gas stove is very inefficient. Buy an electric jug which will heat water much faster and more efficiently (i.e. cheaply).

I must be a hippie as I love cooking on gas lol

Heating water for tea on gas stove is expensive though. Kettles do it faster & cheaper now. You might think about buying one. You can always turn it off at the power point between cuppas (I turn everything electrical off when not in use)

Turn down the gas when you have almost finished stir fries... the wok should be hot enough.

With washing up I'm not sure. Unless you use a lot of water, then try cutting down.

Is it the actual consumption or the charges? My gas bill is higher, thanks to the Carbon Tax, for less usage this quarter.

I am using a water bolier and a vacuum flask, my tea stays hot enough for 12 hrs

I am of course a hippie and drink yoga tea :)

You might heat that water in your microwave.
