Perhaps someone out there can answer this question for me; I'm a 'wanna-be'?

author, and in my efforts to find an agent, I have discovered that they are 'unfair' to writers!

I have spent over three years writing a book. It has 263 pages, and 102,000 words; they have rejected my query, without explanation.

I later learned that they only spent "one (1)" minute reading what I spent hundreds of hours on; working well into the night, making my story interesting and readable.

Obviously, I realize they have others wanting the same as me; but, why just one minute; why not five?

Can someone give me the answer?

Has anyone else had this problem too?

Thank you.

Update:

Thank you all for your suggestions. Obviously, I'm a new writer. Actually, I lied about how long I've been working on my manuscript; it's been close to ten years. I said three, because I thought it would sound like too much if I said how long it really took.

Now I need to bring out my finished manuscript to refresh my memory; it's been lieing in the drawer for probably two months.

When I'm ready to post it here, I'll call it Linda and Mark.

If you'll look for it, maybe you can please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Update 2:

Thanks for the frank words; by the way; I'm not a teen -- far from it; I just turned 79 on the 26th.

You're not going to like hearing what I have to say, but that doesn't make it any less true.

Agents receive dozens or hundreds of queries a day. The majority of their business day is spent helping their existing clients prepare the best manuscript possible and navigating the publishing waters seeking the best publisher and deal, not seeking more clients.

They have to be efficient in going through queries, and they have to be fast, and they have to be somewhat ruthless. There's no time for them to give you five minutes, and there's certainly no time for them to tell you why.

So if you're getting all rejections and silence, there's something in your query which tells the potential agents that your book is not something they could sell. Possibly it's too long for its genre. Possibly the query is poor in terms of writing mechanics and use of language. Possibly the query is just not very good. Possibly the novel simply doesn't sound interesting based on what you say in the query. Possibly the query's quite good but the potential market for the book far too narrow.

There are dozens more possiblys, but in the end not one of them matters. The agents owe you nothing more than "no," or silence which means the same thing.

Have you had your query evaluated by people who know what they're talking about? (Not many of them here, alas.)

    I agree 100% with, Clarice.

Agents are like filters, they sort out the crap from the good. People are under the common misconception that if you get an Agent you'll get published. WRONG! You just stand a better chance. I've always thought it unfair that your book will or will not be Published on the say so of one person. And what one Agent rejects another will accept. It is unfair but it's the way it works.

An Agent once told me that when she opens up the package to a new novel, she starts with the query. The moment her eyes rest on that paper, you (the writer) has 60 seconds to ctahc her attention and if you don't she'll reject it.

I have never had any problems with Agents and found them to be pleasant and professional. They don't always give an explanation, and the fact you seem to think they should tells me you have not bothered to do much research into Publishing - an Agent will smell that a mile away and cross you off. They like you to know what you're getting into.

I would go back over your manuscript, 3 years is far too short, I doubt it's been edited correctly, and there's no to editing that spelling and Grammar I'd suggest you learn how to edit.

Another good point was try putting a piece of your work on here, it wont harm your publishing chances, just see what feedback you get. It may not be as 'ready' as you think.

Too many people, like yourself, rush into Publishing when all they have is no clue and a manuscript that isn't decent at all. What the uneducated eye thinks is okay, the educated one sees its not.

It's not the Agents it's you.

    1) 3 years writing a book! No wonder you're being rejected, you've can't have properly edited a manuscript like yours in such a short time.

I wrote an 80,000 word novel and it took me 6 years to edit it.

    2) YOU HAVEN'T DONE YOUR HOMEWORK - 102,000 is far to many words for a first time novel.

    3) If they rejected your query then it obviously wasn't good enough.

if you make all the mistakes in your script(that have gone unnoticed by you here) then I don't think it's good enough. Agents know most kids are in it for the fame and glory. And so are you.

You wont ever be published, and that's the truth, not at the rate you're going at. There are a few little secrets on how to get your foot in the door that everyone learns as they try publishing. I know them. I've dealt with many Agents.

Bottom line, it's not them it's you. Ever considered that maybe your work just isn't good enough and that's why you're getting rejected?

Source(s): P.S if you're not a teen your writing skills could use some work - the best thing would be to join a writing forum or use this site, post a small amount of your work up, then see what feedback you get. That should give you some idea where you're going wrong.

You clearly haven't done your research. And this said it all for me:

Can someone give me the answer?

No, you go out there and find it yourself. You're lazy and imaptient and looking for a quick route to all your problems, they have total write to reject your work and not explain why. I hope you didn't ask them too.

I'm not going to give you any advice of my own, other than follow what M.E says to a T (that's M.E as in Mary Elizabeth who answered) I put up a question like this months ago and she answered me, and helped me with my work via email. She let me shadow her and I can honestly say I am so, so sorry and embrrassed about the work I sent out to the Agents and I'm glad they rejected me. M.E taught me how to edit my work properly and where to look for the right Agent for me.

I'm still editing my work and it'll take roughly another 3-5 years. So I've forgotten the Agent thing for now. It's like the hurdles, you have to jump one at a time rather than trying to skip some and get ahead to the first line (I'm quoting M.E so that might not be a philosophical as she said it lol).

So I would forget agebts for now, get a clue on how to edit correctly.

Well, they get a LOT of people wanting to be published, and they want something that makes an impression straight away.

Don't be discouraged, remember, Harry Potter got rejected many times before someone decided to give it a go, and look what became of that.
