Can mentally challenged people vote?

We were talking about how little most people actually know about the candidates, etc. and a question came up. Can people with Down's Syndrome (for example) register to vote? Some are very high functioning and some are at a 5-6 yr old's level. Can they vote if they are chronologically 18 but mentally 8? Seems they could be easily exploited. I am curious.

Yes they can vote. You are right about the functioning abilities though, some individuals with Down Syndrome can understand more than others. So as for exploiting goes, they could be convinced by a parent or a care giver to vote for a certain party being told that is the best choice. However, unless they can independently vote at the booth without assistance they will not ba able to vote which rules out those who are legal age but not functioning at a the legal age.

I think it was a good interesting question to ask as I have a child with Down Syndrome and had not given thought to this yet since she is still young. I am not sure if you have seen it but Pres, Obama actually has an ad out right now with a Down Syndrome girl voting for him because she thinks Romney will take away her rights. I am not sure how that works when he is also a Mormon and that faith honors people with Down Syndrome. Time will tell!

it truly is very an exciting question. at the starting up, gaining recognize-how of disabilities do not unavoidably make someone unintelligent or unable to reason. (in truth, Winston Churchill replaced into dyslexic!) Schizophrenia doesn't make someone unintelligent, both, and if that is sweet dealt with, its victims may also imagine very rationally. also, those with milder forms of autism, consisting of Asperger syndrome, might want to be wise and rational and may want to lead on on effective lives. (that is believed that Newton might want to have had Asperger's syndrome, as a count number number of truth.) All that being suggested, i do not imagine that those who're mentally retarded should be allowed to vote, because they're mentally nevertheless little ones, and there is a criminal vote casting age, because it truly is understood that in basic terms human beings interior a particular age variety are able to questioning rationally sufficient to vote for the right applicants or proposals.

a 100 IQ is considered average intelligence . how low on the IQ scale would cut off voting ?

Yale records show that george bush has an 89 IQ . this is above forrest gump , but below average and HE got to vote and even be president of the US . .

  • Actually the most recent Bush was tested with a iq of 125 and no iq scores are not a college test people take. They are typically given at a younger age. Obama is speculated to have a iq of 116 but we have no results on paper probably his mom felt it would be giving into the corporate capitalist machine to test him.
