    3y+1=59 means that when you multiply y by 3, and add 1 you get 59.

    Now, with equations like this, whatever you do to one side of the equals sign, you have to do to the other side.

    Let's start by subrtacting 1 from both sides:

    3y +1 -1 = 59 -1

    The +1 and -1 on the left cancel, leaving

    3y = 58

    Now divide both sides by 3:

    3y/3 = 58/3

    Which simplifies to

    y = 58/3 (= 19 and 1/3)

    5. -x + 9 = 6x - 5 y= -x+9 14 = 7x y = -2 + 9 x = 2 y = 7 6. 5x + 2(3x+7) = 3 y = 3x+7 5x + 6x + 14 = 3 y = 3(-a million) + 7 11x = -11 y = -3+7 x = - a million y = 4 7. x = y+11 x = y+11 3(y+11)+10y=-6 x = -3+11 3y + 33 + 10y = -6 x = 8 13y = - 39 y = -3 8. 2x + 2(4x+4) = 13 y = 4x+4 2x + 8x+8 = 13 y = 4(a million/2)+4 10x = 5 y = 2+4 = 6 x = a million/2 9. 5(y-a million) - 4y = -7 x = y-a million 5y - 5 - 4y = -7 x = -2-a million y = -2 x = -3

    here is a cool trick, rearrange the first and last number

    3y +1 = 59 ---> 9y +1 = 53

    add 1 to both sides

    9y =54

    y = 6
