In the U.S., the laws are different in different states. However, the law never stops you from keeping your assets separate- you just don't put each other's names on your bank accounts, property deeds, investments, etc. When you get divorced, how the property is split depends on the state laws and any agreements you might have signed before you got married- called "pre-nups".
