Why are Castiel's wings invisible on Supernatural?

Just wondering. I'm on season 4, so I don't know if they've explained it.....

Because we do not see Castiel in his true form. The body that we see is a vessel so, just as we cannot see his true face (which would burn your eyes out or hear his true voice (too high pitched) we do not see his wings either.

There is a couple of times though where you do see a ahadow of wings later on in the show as you will see. :)

Seeing his true form usually results in blindness so Castiel took a human host in order to interact with Dean and Sam. He was able to display the shadows of his wings to Dean as proof that he was, in fact, an angel.
