how do companies like vehiclehistory.com get away with scamming people?

They say it cost $1 then charge $19.95. You can get a refund if you get in contact in time. Even the checkout page says $1 but they draft the rest out of your account. They always claim its not their fault its yours for buying the upsale.

They spam up the web like yahoo news and even yahoo answers.

and this one where josh and amelia k repeatedly ask and answer questions about the website. because it gives them publicity.

it doesnt stop there, how do they keep getting away with it?

Update:

They keep saying its your fault for buying upsale, but i never did. i even went back and did it again to make sure, and took pictures of everypage.

You can help to shut them down by posting on sitejabber.com, resellerratings.com, ripoffreport.com, complaintsboard.com, viewpoints.com, mywot.com, scam.com. Sometimes they will refund your money just to get you to stop warning others.

If people are advertising on here, you should report the post if you see it. The site itself, well there's a sucker born every minute that think they can get something for free. The best thing we can do is report them to the BBB or your general attorney.

Cherisha: while I agree you should always read the T&Cs, this site and many other semi-scammy businesses are clearly geared towards tricking people. Just look at all the ads on tv these days and tell me this isn't true the next time you watch one: they ALWAYS say "and get a 2nd one for free (just pay separate S&H" so they deliberately say 2nd for free but ship them out separately?? So, some old woman thinks she's getting 2 whatevers for $19.99, but by the end she's probably paying $8 shipping twice and paying $36. It's built into their system and financials to get more money out of people.

That's not half as bad though as the companies that send you "free" products or a trial product, take your cc number, say it's free "we just need to pay 1.99 for shipping it". What they really want is your cc # on file so they can auto-bill you every 30 days until you go through 4 levels of customer service to finally get it cancelled.

I've never ever bought from any of these people because I see right through all the bs as most people do. Unfortunately there are a lot of older people or just naive people that get tricked into these things. Yes, they should be a little wiser, but then again there shouldn't be such deception by businesses either and GAs should go after these companies.

LOL I agree with Devin about the free thing. And did you read their Terms? When you go through the website and click "YES" or whatever to accept your changes, you agree to:

"After you purchase your report for $1.00, you have the option to purchase our volume discount package for $199.50 details below:

Our most popular package consists of an offer for twelve months of twenty five reports a month for one year to search from millions of records around the United States. By ordering today, you are agreeing to the total cost incurred from the payment plan by accepting all ten payments as described herein and we agree to deliver all services pursuant to these terms. Refund policy: refunds and cancellations are given for last month's payment.Call: 1-855-395-6395.

Billing Information: This offer does not automatically renew. $199.50 billed over ten equal monthly payments starting today."

That's a lot that says what you're really paying for and that's your own fault for not reading.
