Is my dentist just trying to get money from me?

Long story short I chipped a nice piece off the corner of my front tooth. It's not even a 1/4 of my tooth but still a nice size. We t to the dentist and they are saying it defiantly needs a cap on it and they can't just fill it in with a bond. Also said it could need a route canal depending if the nerve was damaged but it will take 6 weeks to tell. They did a temporary bonding in it and it looks great and the tooth dosnt Hurt at all. If they were to do a permanate bonding would it hold? Do I really need a cap put on? It was the inside corner of my right front tooth where it meets the other tooth.

If the temporary bonding looks good, just live with that until it falls off or breaks. Then either do it again, or get a crown. Ask him the cost. Don't be shy. It is expensive. Do you have dental insurance?

If you don't have dental insurance, contact your local county government, because you may quality for no cost, or low cost insurance. Take an active approach, and get the facts.

tell him you just can't afford the cost, right now, and will have to live with bonding for a while. It may last a few weeks or few years. What you eat, and how you bite is what you have to change.

Absolutely no hard brittle foods that require crunching.

That does sound a bit odd, but if you are young, the pulp cavity can be pretty high on an incisor and if it was exposed, even a pulp cap may not prevent it from becoming infected. However, if it doesn't get infected or necrotize in 3-6 weeks (I usually check back after one month on things like that), I don't see any reason he couldn't do a class IV restoration.

Large chips in front teeth rarely hold with composite, but once in a while it can. Trauma causes tooth nerves to die sometimes, which is why they are waiting to see if a root canal needs to be done first.
