Avoid war in the first place.
It's a fact of war that there will always be civilian casualties, especially when certain enemies hide themselves among civilians. Sadly, that makes the civilians legitimate targets of war.

The short answer as im sure you can tell already is that you cant avoid it. The smart / Lucky / fortunate ones will not be there when the fighting takes place. It would be impossible to avoid civilian deaths. at lest initially, after the fighting has been established those that choose to stay do so at their own risk. Just because someone is in a area controlled by the enemy does not make them a legit target even if they are providing aid in a non-combative support setting.

Don't go to war at the drop of a hat. Wait until you are actually attacked by another nation because wars are ugly and civilians will die so you better make sure its necessary to go to war.

"Kill them all... God will sort them out"
anything with more restraint than the phrase above DOES protect civilians.
IF all parties of conflict followed the Geneva convention, it would prevent civilian deaths
IF civilians activelly avoided combat zone, it would prevent civilian deaths
IFinsurgents had not the "blending with civilians" as a principle means of fight, it would prevent civilian deaths
IF human intelligence was able to weed out envious neighbours' false reports to call the airstrikes, it would prevent civilian deaths.
would you fancy -say- US troops coralling the women, children and elderly from qalats, in order to bring them to some sort of safe houses? i guess that would immediately bring rain of "concentration camps" comments.

I don't accept the premise that most of the people who die in wars are civilians. How do you figure?

They can't.......Sure it's not physically impossible but it just can't happen because if you see some of your friends die in combat, then you will change, some people go crazy and start murdering innocent people.
And it also would be hard not to have any accidental civilian casualties in combat too.

thats an idealist question. as long as there is war, innocent people will die. either on purpose or accident it doesnt matter. its a fact of warfare that civilians can and will be caught in the line of fire and some will die.

Don't start a war! Civilian deaths are unavoidable, whether you like it or not.

1. both sides need to agree that civilians are off limits.
2. Evacuate all civilians from the area before the fight.
I can really see the Muslims agreeing to these conditions.....sarcasm.

Fight in Antarctica or the Sahara where there are no civilians.
Other than that, nothing. So don't hold too much breath.
