it (supposedly) started before technology/mass communication was at man-kinds disposal. to count the individual vote, was too time consuming, so, they busted out with the (con) electoral college. they vote for us; saves time for the talking heads. who needs campaigning, when you can just buy a member of the electoral college?
what is it? mostly swine, who get paid lots of money, to keep the rest of the animals complacent.
the fact that it is still functioning.....well, that can be blamed on the people

this isn't a Democracy, that is a representative Republic. that is hence we do not use the universal vote. because with the electoral college, the President is determined via a extra diverse inhabitants. If it were effortless majority vote, politicians would campaign in reality in new york, California, Texas and Florida; and persons residing contained in the smaller states will be thoroughly disregarded. The style of seats contained in the residing house a state has is determined via inhabitants. The state legislatures ascertain the delegates contained in the electoral college. Now at the same time as that is convention for the candidate that wins the universal vote contained in the state to win each and each and every of the electoral votes, it isn't regulation; the delegates are loose to vote even if they want. Representatives are elected with a instantly universal vote, and each person assembly particular criteria is authorized to run.

It is a little complicated, but I think I can explain it well.
Imagine we had only two states.
Only 400 people showed up to vote in California, and they all voted for Obama, and 1,000,000 people in Nebraska Voted for Romney, where there are not as many people.
The populace vote would be 400 to 1,000,000 in Romney's favor. But since California has 53 representatives and two senators, they get 55 electoral college votes. Nebraska has Two Representatives and two senators, so Nebraska gets four votes.
Evidence would show that voters in California were more unsure, and for some reason Nebraska really wants Romney to win.
Because the 400 votes for represent a larger number of people, the electoral college would choose Obama as the winner, because their vote would be 55 to 4. The million for Romney would loose it's strength.
So as an example, if Nebraska had a lot of coal, and California had a lot of plans to produce bio-fuel in the near future, but the coal people were better at scaring people into showing up to the polls, Obama would win, because he won the vote where there was more people.
It was made so that States can't bully the election. That's how they wrote the constitution, and there are not enough people that want that to be changed. So it stays.
I hope that helps.

It's called the Electoral College.
Here goes:
Each state holds a separate, independent presidential election. A resident of one state cannot vote in another state. The candidate who gets the most votes in the state, wins that state.
Each state is also afforded a certain number of "electors", based upon the population of the state. These electors vote for president based on the winner of the state election. The winner of the electoral vote is the president.

Electoral college. Very basically, it's the number of electoral college votes each state gets, which is determined by population. Census is important here.
