Slow computer- any NEW reasons why?

When I say new it's because I have done just about everything most of you kind people have suggested. Such as: Defrag, system restore, deleted old files, cache, and unused files...I have 92% free space, My browser is Google Chrome. I cannot afford to buy anything online that speeds up computers. Is there anything Im NOT doing that will help? Is there any help that I can download for free that will speed this thing up? I am literally sitting there waiting, bored out of my mind, for whatever I'm doing to download!!! Will the new Windows 8 take care of this lagging?

Update:

Thanks for the advice, Bomber...will heed!

Wow the fact that your willing to resort to Windows 8 just shows your desperate... how old is the computer? btw Google Chrome on some computers don't run great... like mine... I can't use Google Chrome because it has a weird lagging problem so I use Opera :) I like it. maybe your computer is just simply getting old.... formatting it and completely restarting will probably fix the lag but if you don't have a Windows disk then thats gonna be a problem, well as far as getting Windows 7 legally... Windows 8 will speed up the computer because it requires less power however the Windows is horrible on laptops/desktops... only good for touch screens... I don't find Windows 8 worth getting.

Have you tried checking for viruses and malware? It is one of the most common reasons for PC slowdown. You'd need to use several programs, including antivirus and antimalware, to ensure your PC is completely free from infections. Try Malwarebytes and Avast, if you don't have favorites.

I use BoostSpeed from Auslogics for maintenance and speed issues, but it's not free. Auslogics has an e-book they can email you a link to when you contact their tech support, it has a lot of info on ways to speed up a computer. See the link in the source box below - there is a download button to get the e-book from that page (it may be locked, but try it). Hope it works. Good luck!
