Insulating Cavity for Through-wall AC?

I have a cavity for a through-the-wall AC but there is no AC unit installed. There is a metal 'plate' on the inside of the wall, and an outside vent. Should I insulate the cavity? If so, how to do this and with what? (Ontario location) AC unit will be installed in spring, but I think I need some kind of insulation for winter.

I have the same problem. Fill the space with blanketing or similar material, then seal over with plastic garbage bag, sealed again with duct tape. Works for me
