Shooting in self defense with an unregistered firearm?

Let's just say I had a unregistered firearm in my home, and some a**hole decides to break into my house for whatever reason and realizes that there are people inside the house and tries attacking us. Now, I use lethal force with an unregistered firearm. End result being I have a body laying in a pool of blood staining my carpet. I call the police, give my statement, go to the police station and get questioned. Blah, blah, blah.. What is the worst that can happen to me (if the police found sufficient evidence proving my statement in self defense)? What is the maximum and minimum sentence for an unregistered firearm?

I also live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I do not have a criminal record if that helps.

Update:

I forgot to add:

In Canada a handgun is illegal. You can not acquire any type of handgun license without having a job that requires you to be armed. And I don't plan on running at an intruder with a bolt action rifle, lol. Shotguns are a different story, but nonetheless, i'm talking about a handgun.

It would be a charge of manslaughter

Manslaughter carries a maximum of life in prison but doesn't carry a minuimum sentence though, realisticly the judge can sentence you to anything from 1 year probation all the way up to life in prison. Usually though judges tend to stick to the lower end sentences, this is done out of fear of the convicted appealing their sentence and having the appeal courts/supreme court overturning the conviction.

There is no self defense here, even if someone breaks in and physically attacks you, your not within your rights to use lethal force. The only time you can LEGALLY use lethal force is if you have reasonable grounds to believe the attacker is trying to kill you, an example would be if someone comes at you with a knife, you could shoot and it would be legal. But if they just walk up to you and throw punches, shooting that person would be manslaughter.

If handguns are illegal, and you are licensed to buy long firearms, get a shotgun with a barrel of the shortest legal length possible for home defense. And don't forget to get plenty of practice with it. If it ever happens that you have to rely on it to save your life, you don't want to be on the losing end in the aftermath.

Plenty of places where they are more than happy to make an example of you.

An acquaintance of mine in California managed to shoot a guy who was trying to rape her after breaking her arm.. She was technically carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and shot the guy through the neck with her .32 auto. She was given her pistol back by the police, and he wound up in a California prison and will be deported to Mexico when he gets out.

This happened not to long ago in NY. The result is you get charged with possession of an unlicensed weapon and serve a max of 2 years in jail, unless the governor pardones you.

If the law in your state makes possession of the gun a crime, and someone possesses the gun, but then uses it in a manner that is not unlawful, they can be prosecuted for the unlawful possession of the gun. Whether a specific prosecutor would decide to pursue such a case is another question. Your question confuses concepts of ownership, possession and use, so if this does not answer your question, rephrase your question and try again.

If its a long-gun, you can be fined $2000 and get six month in jail. If you are a felon, it is 5 years, mandatory. Machinegun is 10 years.

Here's what you say: "I somehow managed to disarm him and he kept coming at me so I had to shoot him with his own gun"

Let the cops then take the pistol and go buy another one.

If the police ask questions on how you disarmed him you respond: "I don't recall, it's like a giant blur."
