what happens if I put the wrong shock absorbers on my truck?
I was given some aftermarket shock absorbers (still in the box), but I don't know if they are designed to be compatible for my truck. What would happen if they are wrong? Is it just that my truck will sit wrong, will something break, or possibly just that the bolts won't fit? Basically, how critical is it that the shocks are designed with my truck in mind?

This is of course assuming that you can actually physically install them and have them fit.
You will have to look at your original shocks and see if the are the same length, the same mounting type, mounting bolts the same? is the stroke of the shock the same? if not.. DO NOT USE
Aside from that, the only problem you have left is the characteristics of the shock themselves.
It will either be too hard of a ride, to cushy of a ride, or just right...
some long term effects might be strange tire wear, if they are too soft... rattles in the truck if they are too hard.
Its all a matter of taste
