Here's a question: do you consider your question indicative of deep thought?

Pure semantics on your part. As vicious as it is untrue.
Typical of superstition despising reason.

I'd suggest to you that some of the greatest philosophers the world has known have been atheist, agnostic or believed in a conception of God that you would most likely find abhorrent.

That's false. I have a degree in philosophy and I can tell you that the vast majority of professional philosophers do not believe in a personal god. In fact, a recent philpapers survey showed that 77% don't believe in such a god, and my guess is that a large portion of the 23% is made up of philosophers working for religiously-affiliated institutions.
Philosophy requires logic, and logic often shows a god like Yahweh to be extremely unlikely.

You do realize that quote comes from a time-period before the theory of evolution, where life was thought to consist of a magical pulsating gel that was clear evidence for gods?
At the time natural theology which explained life as obviously of divine origin probably did incline men's minds to religion. The situation is not the same today because we've since then discovered that life isn't quite what people used to think.
