Who knows their espresso?

A while ago I bought a new espresso machine in hopes of mixing up my morning routine. The machine makes single and double shot espresso which I usually mix with milk or water. The result is OK, but I don't think I'm doing it right. When the machine produces the espresso, it doesn't seem to be as dark or rich as it should be. The stream is initially dark brown, but then tappers of into almost the color of light tea. I grind the beans to the "espresso" setting on my grinder, but I still think something is off. Any suggestions?

There are several factors to consider but we have no idea which brand of espresso maker you have. The paler coffee you see coming out at the end is probably what baristas refer to as 'the creama', which is like a froth of essential oils from the coffee beans. Try Googling the machine you bought + your problem and you will probably find a 100 forums discussing the finer points of coffee making on a specific machine. Good luck...I need to make a coffee!
