WPS File and RTF File Question?
My computer does not have "Microsoft Office" on it. It only has "Microsoft Works Word Processor" on it.
When I type up notes I save them as a WPS File. When I send out notes, no body seems to be able to open them. They say that their computers don't recognize WPS Files. So I have to go in and re - save them as a RTF File just so they can read it.
And I don't understand why I have to save them different ways?

You can use Word to open a Works document file (.wps), even if the file has not been converted to Word format (.doc)
Start Word.
In Word 2000, Word 2002 or Word 2003, click the File menu, and then click Open. In Word 2007 or Word 2010, click Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.
In the Open dialog box, follow these steps:
Change the Look in box to the location of your Works document.
In the Files of type box, click All Files (*.*).
Select the Works document (.wps) that you want to open, and then click Open.

simply get http://openoffice.org/ it's free - use writer and and when you save, change the type to microsoft word 2007 (docx).
or, use wordpad - it makes rtf files everyone can read.
an alternative for compatibility for making .txt files with no formatting is notepad (built into windows also in accessories) or notepad++. this is in accessories.
text editors like notepad and notepad++ were not written to format text since text files don't have any format. but you can /italicize/ words if you want using slashes - it's effective even in emails.
