why are cranberries used at Christmas time?

Is it because they are in season?

Update:

No unhelpful answers please, like "Cause their delecious [sic]". Thanks.

They are in season but they also provide vitamins that are not readily available in other fresh fruits during the winter.

The tartness of the cranberries help cut the fat and richness of things like pork, goose, duck and turkey.

They are pretty, color of the season and all.

They store well so they can be used throughout the winter.

    they taste great.

Cranberrries are in season in the winter. That's why they were originally eaten during the holidays. Now, even though canned and frozen cranberries are available year 'round, they have become part of our traditional holiday meal.

Like pumpkin and apples, they are harvested in late fall and are in season.

Keep in mind that back in the day, there was no produce in stores like now so folks used what was available.
