Still no job, no life and depressed. What to do?

Hi there my name is James, soon to be 25.

Well what can I say, probably most people my age, I still have no job. My life isn't going anywhere, still living with parents and Im so depressed, Im basically miserable all the time.

I worked my hardest to get a degree in Illustration (over 3 years ago) but it seems its all in vain, or is it? Its so humiliating to me to know all my former classmates now have successful jobs, the jobs they've always wanted. And Im struggling to even find any type of job now.

Unfortunately for me, its a bit harder. I have a severe language disability disorder. I've had it since I was born. Basically, I struggle to process language accurately and understand quick adult language. Now Im not making any excuses, but I've had a disadvantage with this disorder. I've had to all my life work 10 times as hard, just to be half as good than the average person. School was a nightmare for me if you can imagine. Because of this disability, it limits me to what I can do work wise. I cant even do some of the most basic jobs, for example, warehouse operative, waiter, bar worker, shop counter worker etc. Its all because of the communication process in my brain is not quick enough. And lets be honest, employees dont have time for that. Believe me I know.

It seems all I can do is use my hands. Pick things up and put things down. It sucks!

My dream job is to be a concept artist. Cause Art is all I can do. Im now worried that what if Im not good enough as an artist?

Im trying so hard to find jobs but no one wants me. Im either having really bad luck or I really suck at everything.

This whole situation is affecting my family as well.

If anyone can please give me some tips and advice, I'd appreciate it a lot.

Thank you.

You have to start looking forward instead of backwards, trust me just keep looking and something will come. Don't stop looking for a job until you get one!

You speak as if you're the only person who lives this way. Remember, youre the only person you know of who lives this way.

Search forums and discussion boards. People have managed to get out of the depressive rut and may have been through your situation. Go find them, talk to them and ask for advice. The only person who will save you is you

Get yourself a portfolio made up and get it online. Networking is the best way to get noticed, and if you have a web page prospective clients can look at then all the better! You can get free web page hosing if you search for it. As you have a lot of time spare you'll have plenty of time to sort this out.

Work wise are you registered disabled? If you are then you can get help/aid from certain places. If not then if you broaden your area of what you can do you'll give yourself more of a chance.

I dare say you don;t suck at everything... you just haven't had been in the right place at the right time yet, and when you are things will change.

Keep positive, but at the same time don't be too positive, just know that things are never as bad as they might seem.

    Good luck!

Firstly, stop worrying, there is no point in it. Instead, start acting.

If you have a talent for art then you’re okay. It doesn’t guarantee success but it will stop you being depressed and feeling worthless as it gives your life purpose. So you are ill-equipped to be a wage slave, so what! Who wants to be that anyway, you were meant for more creative things. If you want to be successful in your art then you need to two things: make your art – do this constantly it’s your passion and it’s worthwhile. Then promote your art – join groups, go to local fairs or classes or anything, showcase your artistic talent in any way you can. Get a website, you can obviously communicate on paper so create a website, a free one on Moonfruit or something. And start putting your work out there.

It’s difficult to find a job at the moment for the experienced people, if you have no prior work experience then yes it is difficult. If you are good with your hands can’t you go back to college and learn a trade like carpentry, stone masonry, massage therapy, come on you can think up some occupations with your hands.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself, yes you have a disadvantage there is no denying that but only you can let it hinder you. Spend a week going round asking for apprenticeships, even if you volunteer at a glassmakers or a print factory manning the machines and learning as you go, this is all still a step in the right direction. Action will never hurt you, just keep moving forward.

I don’t know which country you’re in but there are courses you can do, here in the UK if you are long term unemployed you will get free courses too, go to your local jobcentre and ask for help. They can be useless but at least go.

Do you have an art portfolio? If so digitalise the work and upload it to JamesArtistry.com or whatever you call your site, if you don’t the set about making one! Just get up and go and just cause you are no good with oral communication doesn’t mean you are useless in general.

    Just bad luck James.

Perhaps if you believe your art is great you might be happier with it ?

And perhaps feel proud of your best.

    Great Question.

    Best Wishes.

James, I am so sorry you are having this difficulty. I have just one small suggestion as a possible way forward. I am not suggesting it as an answer but, as someone who also suffered because of a disability that limited my employability, it might help a little. James, you write brilliantly. Your description above is so clear, so descriptive, so strong, - why not try putting together an article for a magazine or a paper on the nature of your particular problems? I am sure there are others with similar difficulties who would find both support and encouragement in your words. Writing about that might just encourage you to other forms of writing, even descriptive writing, maybe. Judging from what is above, I reckon you would have a talent for it and would be brilliant at it. Good luck, anyway!
