While it does help you get into the swing of things faster playing Super Mario Galaxy prior to Super Mario Galaxy 2...
YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PLAY THEM IN ORDER!
There's nothing you're missing on the context of the storyline nor gameplay as they're both self-sustainable stories. The controls are just the same for both games, just a different personal hub & stage select system are in place.

nicely, the Europe reproduction of the activity could have an educational DVD on information and methods on playing the activity. there's a Cosmic instruction manual interior the activity which will assist you to in case you die or get caught on a galaxy after a on a similar time as (basically think of great instruction manual for brand spanking new great Mario Bros Wii). to no longer point out all the signposts and educational characters interior the activity. If this activity desires all that, I propose to prepare on great Mario Galaxy (just to get the hold close of the texture of the activity-play) in the previous circulate in the present day on into the Sequel (which inserts to be magnificent!!!) yet, it is your call....

No. There is no continuity. Personally I would and did. But you won't be missing anything, the two games are completely seperate from each other.
