About dogs...Why are they so eager to meet each other?

I passed by a dog today who was so eager to see (or smell) another dog nearby. If dogs are so excited to meet each other, why are humans not ? Is it because there are more humans in the world ?

DOgs are pack animals and they learn much about there environment form smelling other dogs.

Dogs are not human and don't interact with the world in the same way we do. They don't have social airs and graces, although they do follow strict social rules (if they have been socialised properly).

As dogs age, they become less interested in rushing over to other dogs. Also dogs that live in households with many other dogs also usually show less interest in other dogs.

But for some "lonelier" dogs and puppies, meeting another dog is just so exciting. It doesn't happen often enough.

Polite dogs will always sniff the other dogs butt first before meeting face to face. Submissive dogs may go in to lick the other dogs muzzle. Aggressive dogs may try to stand over the top of the other dog, especially if they put their muzzles directly over the other's back and growl.

  • Have you ever seen a human reading a newspaper? Drinking coffee in the morning at the kitchen table readying or watching the morning news? Well, to a dog, smelling another dog is like reading the newspaper. They can tell all sorts of things from what they smell on another dog - where it's been, what it has had to eat, what it's stepped in, etc. Dogs are also very curious. So, that's why they stick their noses out of car windows. That's why they want to meet other dogs and smell them. Seriously.
