How can I go about doing these effects?

This was an att from a while back. I have always wondered if I could do something like this myself with something like adobe afters. Please point me in the right direction.

    Looks like stop motion but it's no doubt done digitally, a few images depicting the movement of the object, something like you'd draw in a flip book, those frames are then imported as normal and played in sequence, it's then masked out where it appears to go behind buildings and on the images edges.

    A little bit of motion tracking would maybe be used on the cityscape and the paper creatures set as 3d layers

    After effects would do it nicely, possibly illustrator/photoshop for the creatures.
