Jeep Wrangler Death Wobbles?

I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. It drives fine until you hit about 60+mph and then as soon as you hit a bump in the rode you get a pretty violent death wobble almost having to come to a complete stop on the highway in order for the front end to stop shaking. What can I do to fix this problem?

Thanks greatly appreciated.

Death Wobble is most often cause by badly worn, out of round or out of balance tires or a steering geometry problem. A tire balance and alignment, done by an off-road shop, not a place like discount tire or Mr. Goodwrench will probably fix the problem, but if it doesn't the second most likely cause is bad track bar alignment on the drivers side - where it meets the frame. This attachment needs to be completely vertical, not almost, not really close. Misalignment of this usually occurs after a lift, installation of aftermarket or replacement parts, or a worn out bushing.

Check this pic, the track bar is in highlighted in light blue. The end on the right hand side of the pic where it bolts to the frame is what you're concerned with.

If you installed a lift, check that. If new tires don't fix it, its probably worn bushings on that joint. You can't get just new bushings, so get a JKS adjustable track bar (about $200) and have that installed. You should be good to go.

I have a 2000 Wrangler Sport and had the same problem and was advised to replace the steering dampener which I did. Got bright, shiny new yellow Old Man Emu dampener. It looks great but had absolutely ZERO effect on the DW. The dampener just makes the DW feel less sever, it will not stop it. I had the front thoroughly inspected at a front end shop and pronounced in good condition. The tech there did point that the tires BFG 31X10.50-15 were very evenly worn. So long story short replaced both front tires same size, same brand, same everything, had them balanced, weights on both side of the wheels. Had front end aligned, no more DW. Hopes this helps a little.
