Why can't anyone answer my question about drugs in prison?
An answer that makes sense. We know that drugs are used in prison. They have to be brought in by family, friends, guards, maybe even lawyers. Why can't the prison system come up with a way to keep drugs out of the hands of criminals? Also, the gangs. How in the world can there be gangs in prison when everyone is locked up. It seems to me like the prison staff are the ones held hostage by the inmates and they don't even try to change things.
I saw a show on TV tonight that prisons that are privately owned make some people very rich. Maybe the powers that be just don't want things to change.
I'm just curious! Thank you

Some of what you're saying about drugs in the prison are wrong. I can say that, because I worked in a prison for a number of years, prior to retiring. Drugs are NOT brought into the prison by family, friends or anyone else. If they do, & are caught, those people are banned from the prison property for good. Anytime meds/drugs are given to an inmate, it's done in the prison medical department. The prison nurses are on duty, 24/7 at all prisons. There are cells in the medical department, in case an inmate needs to be held for observation, etc.
Gangs do exist in prisons even though inmates are behind bars & even though some medium security prisons house the inmates in dorm style buildings. The inmates have their bodies with tattoos on them, exhibiting gang memberships. Those tats are visible & they want others to know they're in a gang. Inmates have phone privileges & a lot of info is given out over the phone, to other gang members/rival gang members. An inmate can ask favors of people on the outside, especially if that person owes him a favor. Nothing good ever comes out of those phone calls. Inmates can & do plan attacks on their rival gang members. Incoming/Outgoing inmate phone calls, are monitored 24/7. There are usually several prison employees, who will sit down at the end of the day, to listen to the phone calls. They know when something may be going down at the prison & then all prison employees, are gathered in privacy, & informed as to what may be going down.
While it may seem to you, that the prison systems are doing nothing about making changes, but they are fully aware when certain things call for change. When prisons open, they have rules/regulations in place, so the employees/inmates, are in a safe environment at all times. If changes are needed within the prisons, there's a protocol that needs to be followed. Changes can't be made, just like that.
Privately owned prisons, may line the pockets of a few, but the employees don't see it in their paychecks. Some prisons pay well & some don't. I was paid well & I loved my job. No one wants a prison to buckle under. So, when you say that the powers that be don't want change, you're totally guessing. Changes were rare at the prison that I worked in & usually those changes, only affected the employees. ( ex: changes in how paperwork is done, etc.) Changes that affect inmates are rare. That keeps them from wanting to riot, etc.) When they are booked into prisons, they learn one set of rules. Now, if the rules are constantly changed, that's asking for trouble.

because some people just have ways of getting the drugs in the prison without other people knowing. Like getting it in with laundry or something like that...
