Can someone advise me about DVD players please?
I want to buy a multiregion one. I seem to have the option of blu-ray or region 2 (europe) as I live in England. Can I play any old DVD on a blu-ray player and plug it into my my widescreen tv?
Thanks. Can't remember for the life of me what the spec on my telly is but it's definitely not HD, It is however digital and widescreen because the analogue signal for where I live was switched off in April this year.
I do want to play DVDs from region 1 and region 2, but not worth risking stuffing up a player for. So I will have to make sure I buy the right thing.

A few of facts to consider:
- All Blu-ray players ALSO play DVDs (and upconvert DVD to pseudo-HD) for output over HDMI.
- If buying today, and you have an HDTV. there is no reason NOT to buy a Blu-ray player (rather than a DVD player)
- Region coding applies to both DVDs (7 regions) and Blu-Ray disks (3 regions).
- Coding is independent (so a true multi-region player must be set up to be region free for BOTH Blu-ray and DVD)
- About half of all Blu-ray disks are "all region" (See link for a database)
- you don't need a multi-region player unless you plan to buy disks from foreign (other region) sources.
If you DO need/want a region free player you can either apply your own "hack" (and risk "bricking" the player) and voiding the warranty, or you can buy a region free player from a source that will guarantee it. As you might expect commercial multi-region players cost more than a locally purchased otherwise identical device. See links 2 and 3 for further info.

Most manufacturer have stopped producing stand alone DVD players. Due to the Blu Ray disc player will also play the DVD. As for a universal DVD player, you are not going to find one. Only high end players do make them. The only universal player that I know of in the UD market is made by Pioneer Elite and OPPO. The Pioneer Elite is priced around the $350 and the OPPO at $499. Hope this will help you out.
