My dog is scratching at the doors?

He's a 5 year old pug, I got him last year. We just moved in with my grandparents. But now every time he hears them up, or is in a closed room with me, he'll scratch at the door to be let out. This wouldn't be a problem, but sometimes they don't want him around and the dog has to be left with me. Or he'll get up extremely early in the morning.

He's already left scratches on some of the doors. What should I do? I heard bitter apple but I thought that was just for chewing.

My first guess is that he is being let out a lot, and when he hears someone up and around, he wants to go investigate. Pugs are very 'involved", and tend to see the entire neighborhood as their domain.

Rather than entertain this - and reward the behavior by either letting him out or even giving him attention, you need to let him know who is in charge. Hint: that should be you. He would also be better off in a crate, so he can really be ignored properly.

Crate train him, and put him in there with a cover over it, so he is given the message it's time for bed. If he gets bored or needs to get used to being in there, you can soak his kibble, stuff it into a big Kong Classic, and freeze the whole thing for his meals - he'll have plenty to do without tracking every member of the household. Don't give him anything that is off the menu or you'll end up with a case of death defying pancreatitis - just his plain kibble will be fine. And when he stirs, says NOTHING - or your response will be his reward.

Dogs do what works. If they get no response when parked in a crate, it eventually stops, and they lie down. Eventually...

    Hey!

I think that your dog wants to be let out, like you said, but I think he wants to decide when he wants to be let out! There are a few solutions to this problem. You could put in a doggy door, so he could get out whenever he wants. You could get a doggy gate, to block him from scratching the doors as well! You could also tell him not to do it, and put him in time-out if he does it again! What I would do is try to find out the reason why he's doing it. Is it because he's hungry? Thirsty? Urgently needs to go to the bathroom? Try finding out! Leave some food and water at the door if he's hungry, and take him to the bathroom every 2-3 hours! You could also get him a doggy cage, and put a bed and everything in it, and make him sleep in that! I do that with my dog, and it works out just fine! I make it all nice and cozy, and he loves sleeping in his cage! After the night is over, leave him out for the whole day, and put him back in the cage at nighttime! My friend had this same problem, and she installed doggy doors, and it worked out perfectly!

    Hope I Helped!

  • i think it is because 1: your pug needs much more attention 2: it needs some new toys or something to be distracted with or 3: maybe he is scared. try to create a closer bond with your pup. im sure its just a fase. goodluck. :)
