Diabetes in the USA, blood sugar numbers?

Over what number on your blood sugar scale makes you a diabetic in the States?

Update:

Just wondered, I was recently diagnosed as type2 (in the UK) with a A1c of 6.1 ,old scale which is about 43 on the new scale? Thought that a bit severe! However 6 months in, a bit of exercise and cut out the sweeties, I have a A1c in the middle 20s - am I still a diabetic, I ask, yes you are, they say

Normal fasting glucose is 99 mg/dL or below (<5.5 mmol/L).

    Pre-diabetic fasting glucose is 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L).

Diabetic fasting glucose is 126 mg/dL or above (>7 mmol/L).

Any random reading over 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) is considered diabetic.

Although the A1c usually isn't used in isolation to diagnose diabetes, a pre-diabetic A1c is 5.7% to 6.4% and a diabetic A1c is 6.5% or higher.

There are also Oral Glucose Tolerance Test diagnostic guidelines.

A high blood sugar test does not automatically mean you have diabetes.

You cannot just take your blood sugar at a random time and decide you have diabetes.

The tests for it are pretty specific.

The test must be taken fasting and even then, other factors need to be taken into consideration.

A rising blood sugar after a meal is normal.

A rising blood sugar after fasting is not and is an indication of a problem. That usually calls for more testing, not a definitive diagnosis.

I have mine tested often as diabetes runs in my family. Mine is always below 100(fasting test) and my doctor always tells me I am fine.
