They will either base the draft order of the 2011-12 season, or they will do what they did with the 2004-05 lockout and have a draft lottery. It's most likely that they will use a draft lottery. Teams are assigned 1-3 lottery balls based on their playoff experience and first overall draft picks from the last three years.Teams will have a ball taken away if in any of the last 3 NHL seasons of the draft and/or making the playoffs in one of the previous 3 seasons prior to the draft. Every team has at least one ball and no more than three.A team having multiple first round picks(Oilers) will have one ball. So, it looks like the Oilers won't be getting another first round pick if there is a lockout and a lottery, but hey, you never know.Luck might be on their side.

The draft order is determined by the order of the balls picked, with the first ball picked determining the first overall pick, then the second, etc. A total of 48 balls are put into a lottery machine. Each team is assigned random number for each ball they had been awarded. After the first selection is picked, 29 more balls are selected one by one until each lottery position is determined for each team.

    Most probably, like 2005.

Too bad though, this draft is supposedly loaded. It would be a shame if a talented team got a high pick based purely on luck. Montreal had the 5th pick in 2005 and selected Carey Price, despite advancing to the semi-finals in the season before the lockout. Shruggs. At least Edmonton will have a very low chance at first because they have had the last 3. Cough.

It hasn't been introduced yet, yet whilst this is how the 2005 draft became desperate (wiki): As a lockout cancelled the video games of the 2004–05 NHL season, the draft order became desperate by using lottery on July 22, 2005. communities have been assigned a million to 3 balls in keeping with their playoff appearances and prevalent standard draft concepts from the previous 3 years. in accordance to the draft order, the determination worked its way as much as 30 as widely used; then instead of repeating the order as in previous years, the draft "snaked" pass into opposite to the team with the 1st p.c... as a result the team with the 1st p.c.. standard does no longer p.c.. lower back till the sixtieth p.c... The team with the thirtieth p.c.. could additionally get the thirty first p.c... the recent CBA decreased the draft to seven rounds in length, whilst in comparison with 9 rounds in years previous. ------ below those regulations, the communities that would have the optimum quantity of balls in 2013 could be: Calgary, Carolina, Columbus, Dallas, Minnesota, Toronto, and Winnipeg. of course, the NHL has yet to announce what approach they are going to be applying.
