It depends on what the item is. But auctions get the most attention when they're ending. Everyone who is not an eBay store owner gets 50 free listings a month. If you're only selling one item, do a 1-day auction and relist it every day until it sells. (If you list it fixed price, the shortest duration is 3 days.)
