IPhone/IPod touch - What exactly happens when you reset?

How do you wipe an iPhone or iPod touch? What exactly happens when you go: settings > general > reset > reset all settings/ erase all content and settings??? Which one (if either) takes you right back to the start, as if you'd just bought it and it asks you to set up, insert your apple ID etc.?

    It restores it to factory default. It is as if you took it out of the package.

    When you click Reset al settings: the IPod/IPhone will erase everything on your idevice and restore it back to factory default settings aas if you just brought the Device from apple.
