why does jack start a fight in chapter 11 of lord of the flies?

I know it's because ralph and his group came on his land but its need to be more generalized for a project, like for ex: to show authority

but I'm not sure if that one is good,

thanks

He wanted to be the leader, that's it. All along Jack wanted to lead the entire group, and when they voted for Ralph, Jack got angry held a grudge. Him picking a fight, is symbolic of what all bullies do, try to be bigger and more important than what they are. In the end he proved himself to be like a bully, and like a bully he was a coward at heart. When the naval officer asked who was the "boss" Jack started to say him, and realized that he wasn't the leader and stepped back. Picking the fight was just his way to be the leader.
