They don't get any direct government support.

They technically get indirect financial support from the U.S. government through their status as a 501(c)(3) charity: they don't pay taxes on their revenue and donations to them are deductible from U.S. taxes, more or less. See < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501(c)_organization#5... > for a bit more on 501(c)(3)'s.

While the main Wikimedia Foundation is based in the U.S. (the 501(c)(3) I was talking about), there are also official chapter organizations around the world that support the projects, such as Wikimedia Deutchland, Wikimedia UK, et cetera. There's a list of them at < http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Chapters >. I don't know offhand if they've received direct financial support from their local governments, but in general they'll apply for local charity statuses analogous to the U.S. 501(c)(3) designation.

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that is not used by the government. However, I know for a fact that US government agencies do sometimes use Wikipedia. (ex. the National Hurricane Center using Wikipedia's hurricane track maps in their cyclone reports)
