The thing is, companies generally exist to make money. Editing is quite a skilled job - the going rate is about $25 per thousand words. Even proofreading costs about $5 per thousand words. If you're just "willing to write a novel" as opposed to "have written a novel," you could easily end up spending a lot on stuff you don't need. There are also a lot of scams out there, and if you don't know the warning signs, it's easy to get suckered by them.

Read a few books and articles about how to write a novel. Maybe take a few classes if the books don't put you off. Write a lot, and show what you think is your best work to people who are better writers than you. Use what they tell you to edit your writing and make your next piece better to begin with.

You could mail actual authors for tips, they might actually reply. But most people just use Creative Writing Groups or teacher's help.
