Random question that would save millions or more.?

Monetary reform isn't really a big deal, but nobody seems to be supporting it. It costs the government 2.41 cents to make a penny. They have no real value, as nothing costs a cent and most places don't accept them anyway. The nickel is in the same position. It costs 11.18 cents to make this 5 cent coin. We have gotten rid of coins in the past. All we have to do is pass a bill to stop making them. Is there anything I'm missing? Why haven't we kicked these coins to the curb yet?

Update:

@Rance I wouldn't go that far. Money only lasts a finite amount of time, so we have to keep printing. But when the money is hurting us, every time we go to the press, it needs to be cut. Coins usually last 30 years or more. Paper money only lasts about 40 months.

Update 2:

@Paladin Sorry. Had a little brain fart there. I meant machines. Like vending machines. And if you try to buy something with just pennies, most shops get pissed.

I think it's even odder that I just heard a story that they are going to stop printing dollar bills and mint them all as coins.
