Oil dipstick WAY past full?!?
Ok, first off, I have a 1991 Subaru Legacy Wagon.
Its been having a history of not starting very well. We thought something was up with the fuel filter, but it was fine (apparently). I can't afford to put it in the shop again! I just had the crankshaft pulley and muffler replaced.
Anyway, my bf changed my oil at the beginning of November. I drove four hours away, to my place, and about two weeks later he checked my oil and found it to be empty. We added the one quart I had on hand. Last week, I added two quarts. My car takes 4.8 total.
Checked the oil yesterday AND today, found it was darker oil that went wayyy past the full line!! I am stumped! And all of a sudden, my car is starting normal??? But before it did that, it wasn't starting hardly at all. I have to pump the gas for it to start.
WORDS OF WISDOM PLEASE?
No need to be a dick!
We always check with the engine cold and turned off, same when we change the oil. We have changed it many times with no problems.

The most likely cause is the oil is not properly draining back from the cylinder head. There are drain-back holes in the head and if they become fouled with sludge the oil will accumulate under the valve cover, making the oil read low. If/when the oil makes its way back to the crankcase the oil suddenly appears several quarts higher than normal. That would also account for the darkness as the oil dissolved sludge in the top end.
Sludge is not good news, especially when it is already blocking passages. What that has to do with starting, I'm not sure. This is a good time to ask teh shop for advice for your particular car. You can't live with the oil doing this and using a flush could obstruct oil passages and seriously damage teh engine. These things must be done delicately or you hurt the spell.

It can be as bad for an engine to be overfull on oil as under full on oil.
You need to change the oil and add the correct amount - that amount is in your owner's manual. The oil on the dipstick should be between the two marks. Understand that it takes a few minutes for the oil to return to the pan after you have driven for awhile, so check either check the oil before you start the engine for the first time that day or wait until after you have filled the car with gas at the station. You check the oil with the engine turned off.

Are you pulling the YELLOW handled dip stick which is the crankcase oil. If it has been overfilled it should be drained from the oil pan drain plug immediately!
When oil pans are overfilled the crankshaft counter weights beat all the oil in the oil pan to an air filled milk-shake. When the poor oil pump forces air and oil to the frictional surfaces they will overheat and fail!

the finished mark could be closest to the cope with and the low mark could be closest to the tip. i've got self belief the marks are holes or strains, the twist isn't there for length purposes. you need to examine the point with the motor vehicle off, and after it has set for slightly. it does no longer marvel me if a save overfilled it.no longer possibly risky, yet can injury gas mileage, because of the fact the crank has to splash by way of greater oil each and each revolution p.s be certain you're checking the oil dip stick, and not the transmission....The transmission must be checked at the same time as working, and could look over-finished while the motor vehicle is off.

even new oil turns dark quickly that's normal. as for the oil suddenly rising never herd of that be for. the only thing i would suggest you do is drain some oil out and put some oil system cleaner in and run the engine this should clean any possible buildup then replace the oil and filter.

Does the oil on the dipstick smell like Gas at all? If you had to pump it, it might have had alot of gas go into the oil pan. This is bad. You should drain and refill no matter what. Don't drive it really full.

Your vehicle is fuel injected, pumping the pedal does nothing. Holding the pedal down will stop the motor from flooding. Looks like you and your boy friend need to learn to read a dipstick properly. You need to let the motor sit for 5 minutes after shutting it off before checking the level. Check both sides of the dipstick.
