Should I seek the help of a psychiatrist?

I'm nineteen, and I've been seeing a psychiatrist since the age of fourteen, and after some research today, I'm wondering if I should tell him about this occurrence that's been happening. I've been noticing it for quite a while, at least a year. I repeat my words when I'm speaking to someone, and also when I type them I say them after I've typed them. Also, more recently I've noticed that when I leave the room, even if the light is off, or it's meant to be left on, I have to touch the light switch. I've done some research about Tourette's, and I was wondering if it sounds serious enough that I should talk to him about it? I've done some research about different types of tics and according to my research, these are characterize as complex tics, and are more serious.

Also, I've been diagnosed with OCD, characterized by counting and hand washing rituals, and I have ADHD and insomnia.

hi Delilah. please do not worry that you have developed Tourette's syndrome. the symptoms you've described such as repeating what you say, saying out loud what you type and touching light switches when you leave a room are simply further symptoms of your OCD.

please mention these symptoms to your psychiatrist at your next appointment as your medication may need adjusting and new coping techniques learnt. best wishes, A x

You already are - you said you've been seeing a psychiatrist since you were 14.

OCD is characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear or worry, by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety, or by a combination of obsessions and compulsions.

Some people have excessive counting and handwashing, but most don't. Pre-occupation with thoughts is the primary symptom for many people, and irrational repetitive behaviors.

You're not describing Tourette's, nor are you describing complex tic's fully, you're describing OCD which can include repeating yourself and reading typed words. Perhaps you're even describing Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder which includes palilalia, ADHD and ptsd, bodily disorders and/or habit problems.

In palilalia involuntary repetitions consist of complete sections of words or phrases, often repeated many times, and the speaker has no difficulty initiating speech. If you cannot stop yourself from repeating, then you might have this speech disorder.

Complex tics are very rare in the absence of simple tics.

All you can do is talk to them. NEVER try to diagnose yourself!
