I have a fake tree so I need to put it together first and spread out the branches, one year I forgot to do that, and remember after it was all done, looked funny but that is how it stayed,,last year I bought a pre light tree, so I first put on the garland , green, red, white , gold, blue...I do multi colour tree because I to me it just seems that is what i want. then I put on the ornaments, I wanted my tree to have a meaning, so when people look at my tree they understand the true meaning of christmas, so my ornaments are mainly the nativity scene and angels, etc....I start from the top to bottom usually..the last thing is to go up is an angel that looks over the rest of my ornaments..

I decorate top to bottom. I always put the lights on first, then the garland, then the ornaments, and last is always the tinsle for the finishing touches.

Holiday wreath first. For the tree: lights first, then ornaments. Finish with the tree topper, to give it the finished look. Then outdoor lights/decorations can be worked on.
Good question!

Usually top to bottom and I put lights on first and ornaments on last. Well, the tree topper is the absolute last.

I myself don't have a Tree but my Father usually puts the lights on first than the decorations.

Of course lights first...........putting lights on AFTER all the ornaments is a beeyatch and ends up breaking Ornaments.
You put the lights on first, more deeper into the tree.......so the light shines OUT........glistening off the outer ornaments and making them shine-
Likewise, of course start at the top.....and work your way down.....and for me, the FINISHING touch, is that I have serveral electrical ornaments, that have to incorporated into the string of lights........so I have to leave special places for those, -----places of honor, where they will get most noticed.
They also need extra special care......wired into place to support their weight, so they don't yank on the lights.

It is pre-lit so I just start adding decorations. It is 6 ft tall and I am only 5'3" tall so I need a step
ladder. I start at the top & work down.
