Thanks for the news Stan. Sorry to hear. DB was and always will be great.

NPR did a great piece on him - I think the show is called Jazz Profiles with Nancy Wilson. It talked a lot about his approach to the use of time signatures and time in general, how Take Five was a crossover hit, and that every tune on the original album that contains Take Five is in an odd-meter time signature. You might be able to find it on the NPR website, or keep an ear on kcsm.org for a rebroadcast

One more: Dave attended University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. I investigated UOP as a possible venue for my undergrad degree and discovered that it was (is?) mainly a classical school and that Dave would have been a jazz genius no matter where he went. At that time (late 70s) Stockton was a beautiful town, not the foreclosure-riddled mess it is now.

Yes, he died at the same age as Sir George Shearing who passed away on Valentine's day 2011.

Channel 4 did a very brief item on him and mostly showed footage of Paul Desmond rather than Brubeck. Many people fall into error believing that Brubeck wrote take Five but it was Desmond.

Brubeck had a trademark of using different time signatures: Take Five being the best known in 5/4, also The Unsquare Dance which was in 7/4.
