I've upgraded my TV...now need to upgrade the surround sound.?

Just purchased a new 3D HDTV. Now it appears that my 7 year old Home Theater in a Box system (Panasonic SA-HT930) is way to outdated. I've really loved the performance and sound from the system...but with absolutely NO digital inputs...it's gotta go. I've looked at updated versions of the Home Theater in a Box...but all except the +$599 category seem cheap, flimsy and most don't even have a powered sub (just passive).

I really can't go and spend another $1000 on all new Home Theater equipment...so I'm hoping you guys might have some ideas. I'm considering 2 options:

Please let me know if I have missed anything

Option 1:

Buy new Home Theater in a box. If someone has some good recommendations on a HTIB that performs well and is not very expensive...I would love to hear it. I love the one I've had...so I'm not against them. Must have Blu-Ray/3D capability.

Option 2:

Build a new Home Theater.

Fortunately - the 2 front, 2 rear and 1 center channel speaker from my old Panasonic appear to be normal speakers with regular speaker wire connectors. I would need a recommendation on a receiver as well as a sub. Again - must have 3d Pass through capability.

I'm really looking to maximize what I have without having to spend as much on the audio as I did on the TV.

Thanks

I'd go with option 2. The speakers from your old Panasonic, to say the least, are not good ones.

Maybe move the 930 to another room to use for background music.

The good news is that to go with option 2, you don't have to spend $100. You can, but you don't have to.

At the lower cost end, you could get a set of Polk speakers, a full 5.1 set, the model 6750 for $180 from Newegg. Then add a Yamaha 371 receiver from Amaz*n.com for $170, or a Pioneer 522K for $180. You'll need some connecting cables, like 100 feet of speaker wire (A roll of 16 gauge on Amaz*n should run about $11), a subwoofer cable (Ditto Amaz*n, about $7) a digital optical audio cable (Ditto, $6), and a couple of good HDMI cables (Ditto about $6 each).

Add the disc player of your choice, and you'll be all set. A Samsung 5300 BluRay player is $70 on Amaz*n. I don't know if you want BluRay V/ Upconverting DVD, or even 3D BluRay. There are many good choices, even with a 3D player for no more than $110.

And, an added benefit of going to separates is that if/when one part breaks, you don't have to junk the whole setup.

I would not recommend any of those home theater in a box. They are not flexible for adding anything or for up grading at a later date. The only system that I can recommend with confident are the Onkyo HT-S3500 to 9500. It is a 5.1 to 7.1 receiver and a set of speakers. They are available at any Fry's Electronic and price starts at the $300 range to $1,000. It is the only home theater in a box that Home Theater Magazine recommends. You add a Panasonic Blu Ray disc player and you have a nice dependable system. I still use my Panasonic blu ray disc player model BD-10 which is the first generation and played over 330 blu ray movies without one issue. Hope this will help you out.

Option 3: Onkyo HT-S3500 plus a 3D Blu Ray player from Panasonic. A real Home Theater under $400.00 that can handle 4 sources & can be upgraded.
