co-worker crossing the line . long sorry?

I work alongside a expert heavy equipment mechanic that would have retired a few years ago but his grandson was kicked by one of his horses so he kept working and his retired wife went back to the corp office next door to the shop so they could pay off the medical bills .. respectable!

For the last few months I've noticed a change in him ... he's been trying to cause problems with my shift as he is pissed off that the shop boss that he has to listen to is my age ... so he's trying to see who he can get fired as he has became bitter .... he has been sneacking into the shop to try to catch us not doing our job so he would have something to tell the ceo ... he's been having his wife feed him personel info from the corp files ... time card info and whatever ... which is not his place or postion .... last sat he was in the shop looking out the door and timing when we arrived ... I expect he will be there today .. on his day off again ... to attempt to cause problems .... I'm getting fed up with his crap .... if I take any action it will get both him & his wife fired ..... any ideals anyone ....thanks

Update:

Your correct ... he is very old school cowboy/rancher/race horse breeder ... he belives he is the only one that does anything in our very busy shop .... we have equipment coming in from several of our other shops because our shop can deal with problems our other locations can't fix ..... he's been making comments about information he shouldn't know in several directions .... my problem is not so much how to prove things so much as I enjoy working there and making a decent wage .... I respec,t him and think a lot of his recent actions are age related ..... so how do I fix this with harming him or his wifes job? We do our job correctly withen a reasonable time .. we work with haz-mat products so it has to be right ....

Update 2:

Update 3:

I should add that I know his internal guilt over the fact his grandson being kicked in the face .. and the fact that the kid is marked and affected for life plays into this as well ... I'm afraid he may have a strke over it ...I see it effecting him which is another reason I've been holding back from dealing with him

Update 4:

Yes rita he tried to get a reaction from me yesterday ... filled my toolbox with garbage. Then attempted to piss me off face to face ... he didn't get any reaction .. I let it go ....

Think its been 30 - 40 years since I went surfing .... that comment made me laugh thanks

What he is looking for is a reaction and if you do anything you might just be giving him what he wants. I think you should look the other way and be the best employee you can be instead of making waves. Waves are never good except when you're surfing.

It sounds like he feels you guys are a bunch of slackers. If he feels the need to watch and see what time you all get there he probably thinks it's unfair you get paid for a full days work when you are all late. I am guessing, that's all. People of retirement age have a work ethic that is strict, most of the time, and they want others around them to learn the same ethic.

I think the wife has crossed the line if she's going into personnel files and such. She should be reported but then how are you going to prove it?

try video taping him. Him and his wife are really breaking the law if she's sharing private info with him. ( most think it's expected if a couple is married, but only owners should get away with that). As long as you know your doing your job, tell him to kiss off.
