What is Swindon like as a place to live and work?
Me and my partner are looking at moving from Lincoln to Swindon in the New Year. She works in the Insurance industry and I am currently a Courier, but have a Fork Lift Licence and Factory/Warehouse experience, also have Retail experience. Price wise is similar to Lincoln so we can afford to live, however my question revolves more on the social side of Swindon, we like pub's and bars and are both into the alternative scene, we also both like live music (smaller unsigned bands). So what is Swindon like for these things? We are visiting between 14th/16th December and any help would be appreciated. We have researched and visited many places but Swindon seems to offer us what we have been looking for employment wise, just the social aspect now.

Swindon is not as nice as Lincoln. It is now mostly modern estates linked by roundabouts. It's no longer part of Wiltshire. It's a unitary Authority. It's not all that friendly. I can't comment on the culture. I have only worked in the town during the day.
On the plus side, it is a growing town and work opportunities are better than average. The surrounding countryside is very nice. It has a very good outlet shopping centre built in old railway sheds. It has good communications to London and the West Country.

Swindon is not as old as Lincoln. It grew up around the railway syatem in the Victorian era. It is now the largest town in Wiltshire with quite a lot of industry and all the usual urban facilities including many bars and clubs. Not a great place for culture, it is surrounded by beautiful countryside - The Cotswolds, Marlborough Downs etc and is less than 1 hour away from London by frequent train
