Did the Cult of Celebrity drive the nurse to suicide or the prank call?
It is so sad that a nurse takes their own life after receiving a prank call from an Australian radio station regarding the Duchess of Cambridge being in the hospital where she worked for morning sickness.
However did the Cult of Celebrity play a part in this sad situation?
20 years ago the reaction to this news would have been different.Even the press would have handled it differently bearing in mind the security problems that may have occurred if terrorists knew where a target could be got at.
Even not so long ago when the Duchess went topless a paparazzo was able to take a photograph which showed how slack the security measures were.
The ravenous hunger people seem to be suffering from in their vainglorious need to read and know information about two people who are no better then you or I except by the privilege and power and prestige they possess just because they're royal strikes me as insane however I neither like them or dislike them I tend to ignore them.
My point is this.
Was the nurse already suffering from an underlying psychological illness and due to an unbalance of her mind due to this prank call drove her over the edge?
Or was she threatened with punishment by her employers for letting the call go through although they've denied this.
Or is the excessive amount of attention these people get from the 4th estate who perpetuate ad nauseaum in the newpapers and magazines the real reason why the prank call was made?
Is the Cult of Celebrity healthy at all for our society in that it distracts people especially young people to aspire to the impossible?
I mean just look at the X factor and you'll get what I mean as an example.
What are your thoughts?
Yes Kimmy I can agree but here in the UK the 2 djs are getting the blame and the coppers have gone to Oz to question them.

Us Aussies are just the left overs from the convicts thrown over here for stealing loaves of bread ... remember? ... we are just having fun with life and nobody meant any harm.
I could of killed myself dozens of times mate ... and who would care? ... my kids and my grandson and not many other people ... wow ... !
There are also bets on about the choice Kate will make (((We don't call he the Duchess))) when the baby is born ... a natural birth or a c-section?
If the nurse had any smarts ... she would have made a mint with her story and retired from work.
Did the woman who gave Clinton Felicio, suicide?
Blame is pointless!!!
I was made 2nd most wanted in my country with a reward on my head and the newspapers printed that I was "Wanted for the murder of a social worker" ... and who cares? = Nobody!!!
It was just another newspaper and who would get the blame if I killed myself? = Nobody!!!
I get told to toughen up and stop being a whinger!!!
Lets not forget that my own 18month old child drowned dead one year before I was made such a spectacle out of and I had to kidnap my own kids from the government and go on the run and who thinks I would have the right to kill myself? I would be called selfish if I did and here in the state where I live, it is a crime and if my suicide attempt fails then I get charged with the crime of attempted murder on myself, so work that one out mate ... this is Australia ...
Source(s): And to my fellow Australians on this page ... Do you care about me and my dead kid? Do you care about my future? Will you fight for my rights" No and the reason is because I'm not a royal and my bloodline ain't worth nothing!!! Poor me!!! - Anonymous8 years ago
The cult of celebrity was the reason the prank call was made in the first place, and so you could say that it led indirectly to the suicide.
I don't want to add to the volumes of windbagging on radio phone-ins etc by speculating on the nurse's mental state, but it is unlikely that this one incident would have led to a well-balanced and happy person topping themselves.
As for the Scotland Yard involvement, the detectives are supposedly gathering evidence for an inquest, and it is most unlikely that there will be any criminal charges. I think there is more than a touch of posturing and blustering on behalf of the UK and our precious Royals in sending in the heavies to sort out these naughty colonials. I hope they give them a good spanking.

A lady from a different culture and background has died because of a rather stupid prank played on her. Not a celebrity or a politician but an ordinary person trying to do their day to day job.The result is that she has possibly felt totally humiliated nd has died by her own hand. By any stretch of the imagination the prank went too far. Wed all HAVE TO PAY FOR THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR OWN STUPIDITY. The consequences of this one was that an innocent woman died. No she should not have killed herself but she did as a result of that prank which did not affect the rich and famous but an ordinary person ill prepared for that which was done to her. May she rest in piece and her family be consoled. I agree that this could not have ben foreseen but it does underline the stupidity of these pranks unless the victim has an opportunity to block the transmission

It was a prank, and a joke by juvenile people on the establishment. An establishment that has no sense of reality or humour.
It was not vindictive and at worst was childish.Being childish when you are young is not yet against the law.
This receptionist/suicide woman is the silly one,for without a sense of reality or humour, firstly she did not recognise that this call was fake and secondly she has killed herself.
She had other family problems. She was not living with her husband and was possibly vulnerable herself.
I doubt her managers supported her as they say they did and I expect they are covering their own bases now as they accuse and shout how appalled they now are.She is ...was a weak link...we cannot legislate for all weak links...but Britain attempts to at every turn of events.
The Royal family had no problem with this incident. It is only now that our establishment cries into it's tea cup. It's pathetic and destructive to World communication to blame these young DJ's for one silly woman's domestic life and death decision.
Our media and it's 'friend' the British Government does not recognise the true victims in this PC humourless and accusing, negative new Britain.
We are idiots for concerning ourselves and judging a situation we don't really appreciate. We live in an era of blame culture when we should take responsibility for our own actions.
I expect British lawyers now will encourage the suicide woman's family to sue this radio station and all will make a lot of money out of this episode.
A joke free Britain will be the result.

That prank phone call was not a normal reason one would kill themselves. It wasn't even mean, just a joke. I remember everyone laughing and thinking it was hilarious when those DJs called Sarah Palin pretending to be the President of France but all of a sudden this is evil? Blaming those prank callers would be as rational as if the police walked in on a person who killed themselves, saw their computer on my post then blamed my post for upsetting them so much they killed themself. I think its a shame this woman had such deep problems but I don't like the attack on freedom of speech.

The radio station involved (2dayFM) has been in trouble here before this stupid stunt , One of the presenters Kyle Sanderson is still on air even after countless warnings by the media watchdog for calling female reporters "slags" and other choice remarks.
You have to consider that these 'stunts" are encouraged by the stations management and now that this tragedy has occurred their "circling the waggons" and producing media releases saying the two radio host involved are "shattered" .......please their shock jocks they really don't give a ***** about anyone but themselves, what I'm trying to say is the station is feral and really needs it's licence pulled
And dude the police haven't come here (yet) they've only asked for details ......personally I hope they throw the book at them

Well I'm in Australia and I thought the stunt was disgusting to begin with. Those who are saying she must've had some problem to commit suicide are probably those who thought it was funny. When I first heard of it I was angry that the DJs attempted to invade royal privacy but wondered how the hell they were successful given their poor accents? Made more sense though when it turned out the receptionist was from India and in an unfamiliar culture, her colleagues have said she was a very good nurse but described herself as 'a nervous person'. Must be awful to feel the whole country hates you and is laughing at you, to have your professional ability called into question particularly in the health care industry and when you're away from your home country and family. That's probably what the DJs feel now and they are acting like the victims... it's too bad they didn't show the same concern for the wellbeing of the nurse.
We don't seem to have learned anything from Princess Diana. For William, this must be very painful - he knows what it's like to lose a mother partly from media harrassment. He's known to be very protective of Kate, which is completely understandable.
If you're in the UK though, this is a radio station with a particularly bad reputation in my country, 2day FM. I blame management/producers more than the two DJs and think more people should lose their positions. In the past few years, their best known host Kyle Sandilands has been in trouble numerous times, been suspended but always allowed back to his job. I'd never heard of these two DJs previously but given this station's track record something like this was bound to happen sooner or later.
75 per cent of Australians think that what they did was wrong. Of course more details have to be confirmed but if it turns out the nurse was caused severe distress I don't see how the DJs can return to their jobs. There's been talk of the stations license being revoked, our biggest supermarket and telco have also pulled their ads from the station.
Most of our media though are okay and generally respectful of people's privacy. We don't have a big paparazzi contigent out here for example, there's a segment but I don't think it's as bad as the UK or US.
The DJs should be stood down I think out of respect to the nurse's family, the anger will continue if they're allowed to stay there. But I don't think it was just them and radio as a whole needs to ban these pranks and stunts for ratings, it's gone too far. Especially trolling a hospital working hard to help sick people and save the dying for God's sake.
