What is "Distance Spanning"?

This is one of the terms that will be coming up in my Communications class final, but I can't seem to find the definition for it in either my textbook, my class notes, or the lectures that the professor has posted online.

I'm not positive but I think it has something to do related to health-oriented communication?

Any help would be extremely appreciated. I've tried googling the term as well and haven't been able to find anthing relevant either

Thanks

After not finding it anywhere from class-provided materials, someone else in my class described it to me sort of like learning information about someone or something through someone else. In other words, enables utilizing expertise that ordinarily wouldn’t be accessible.(ex: friends mom is a nurse, might find out information from friends)

I really have no clue but I am taking this term to mean learning something you wouldn't know without having a chain of sources to gather it for you. Sort of like this website, you wouldn't have access to the answer so you came here to find out from others.
