plane question i need immediate help !!!?
plane flys 500m north and then 30degrees west from south what is the distance the plane can travell back to the start safely without running out of gas in 4hrs.
first distance is 500 t with t representing time then the other one is 140 bc 4 times 35 is 140....then the hypotenus of the triangle is 2000-500t....BUT where does the 2000 come from ??

To be sure of not running out of gas, the pilot must stay on his current course of 30 degrees west of south until he reaches the same latitude as his starting point. Then he must go due east because that would be the shortest line from his turning point to his starting point.
h = line of his current course (hypotenuse)
x = course due east (the side of the triangle that's opposite the 30 degree angle)
cos 30 = 500/h
h(cos 30) = 500
h = 500/cos 30
h = 577.35
To find x
sin 30 = x/500
500(sin 30) = x
x = 500(sin 30)
x = 250
The total distance around the triangle
500 + 577.35 + 250 = 1,327.35 miles
By the way, if you're going to put a 4-hr time limit on the flight, then you must give either the speed of the plane in miles per hour or its fuel consumption rate in miles per gallon (and the capacity of its fuel tank).
